Confirmation: An Introduction by Fr. Curtis
The Sacrament of Confirmation (with Baptism and Eucharist) completes the process of Christian initiation and is normally administered by a bishop. The Confirmation candidate receives the Holy Spirit as help and guide, is strengthened as a witness to Christ and his Gospel, and is bound more closely to the Catholic Church. The Sacrament of Confirmation is received only once in life. In the Confirmation ceremony there is a renewal of Baptismal promises, a special prayer with the laying on of hands, anointing on the forehead with the Oil of Chrism (with the phrase “Be sealed with the gift of the Holy Spirit”), and a greeting of “Peace be with you.”
