Sacramental Preparation and Celebration

Sacraments of Initiation

Baptism

Registered parishioners participate in the Baptismal Preparation Program to have their infant baptized at St. John Parish.  Parents of the infant arrange for the date of baptism with the pastor.  Usually, baptisms are not scheduled during Lent and Advent.

Adults and school age children participate in the process for Adult Initiation.  Their baptism occurs at an Easter Vigil when they have completed their preparation.

Sacraments of Healing

Anointing of the Sick

There are occasional communal celebrations of the anointing of the sick.  Individuals who are seriously ill, scheduled for surgery, have an acute situation with a chronic medical condition or who are weakening because of advanced age may have an individual celebration of the sacrament.  Family and friends are encouraged to participate.

Reconciliation (formerly known as confession)

St. John parish generally provides a communal celebration of reconciliation during Advent and Lent.  A number of confessors are present.  The date and time are announced in the bulletin and on seasonal schedules for Advent and Lent.

Celebrations for individuals are Saturdays from 4:00 to 5:00 p.m. during most of the year.  During Advent and Lent, the sacrament is celebrated on Saturdays from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m.  Other times for individual reconciliation may be arranged.

Sacraments of Commitment

Holy Orders

Persons interested in the priesthood should visit with the pastor.  He will have information on contacting vocation directors.  He also has information for those interested in vowed life in a religious communion and for those interested in professional lay ministry.

Marriage

Engaged couples should contact the pastor at least six months before the anticipated wedding date.  At least one person must be a registered parishioner and the wedding date will not be reserved until marriage preparation begins.  Preparation consists of approximately five one-hour pastoral sessions and five two-hour sessions with a group of engaged couples and an experienced lead couple.  An information packet about parish policies is provided when the date is set.
